Some of them came out WONDERFUL. Some of them came out odd. It was hard because I'm short and the red and green lights just didn't photograph well. Got some shots in the blue lights though and they're gorgeous.

Concerts are already the ultimate bliss, but there's just no feeling like seeing a band you love for the first time.

Getting to the Paradise was no problem. I must've been 7 years old since the last time I rode the subway, and obviously things have changed since then. There was this guy playing guitar in the station and it was like, all spacey and awesome. He was wicked cool. And then we made it to the Paradise and ended up being the first in line, which made me feel like a special dork.

Talked to a few Midlake fans. They were nice. I liked them. Haha, there was this one woman and I was just waiting for her to say where she lived because had such a Massachusetts accent. She was from "Woostah". Saw this guy who looked JUST like Tom Bentley. I only saw him for a second, but it was convincing enough that I sent him a message on Facebook to see it if was him. XD

The doors to the place opened like, half an hour late. DUMB. At least it wasn't freakishly cold or hot outside.

Bought some good concert swag. Got the green Van Occupanther shirt I saw online. I didn't get the tour shirt 'cause it would've looked awful on me. But I also got a patch for my jacket.

There were two opening acts. The first was this guy who's name I can't remember, but he played the keyboard. I liked him. I'm not gonna buy his CDs or anything, but he had a nice voice. His songs were a bit odd. I'd love to meet the bitch that must've mentally kicked him in the balls so hard. Every song was like, how he was mistreated by some chick.

And the second act was really great! I bought their CD on the way out. This chick Dawn Landes and her band (which consisted of this guy who looked like Markham on the cello) and a drummer who had a long beard and came onstage in his boxers. But they were really fun, I liked them a lot. I was a big fan of their use of the cello.

And at long last (seriously, it was like, 10:00 by this point) Midlake came onstage and fucking blew me away. They were amazing. I had a GREAT spot, (usually) right in front of the very sexy Mr. Tim Smith (who is married, I saw the wedding ring. D:). Haha, I blew through my roll of film pretty quick and I know these pictures will actually come out good because the stage isn't 5 feet off the ground.

Highlights:

- In This Camp. I fucking love this song and it was unbelievable. Like, I don't even know what to say. It's easily one of my favorites songs ever by anyone, and live it was even a million times better than it already was.

- The new song! It was awesome! I'm really freaking excited about it. It was great. And when they played it it was cute because Tim and Eric were sitting side-by-side at the same keyboard. And it's just adorable when people do that. XD Oh man, I loved the song.

- THE JUNGLER. If I had to pick my favorite song of the night, this was it. I always liked the song, but it's been one of those ones that I tend to skip over. Not anymore. It was insane. It was so hypnotic with the drums going crazy and Tim just singing it all velvety smooth the way he does. It was GREAT.

- Roscoe. Tim doesn't play it the same way I do. I use a capo, he didn't. *shrug* But it's such a great song.

- Excited But Not Enough. This was one of the first Midlake songs I heard, and I got to feel special because Tim's like, "This song is very, very old. The real fans will know it."

- Balloon Maker and Kingfish Pies. I just love these songs and I'm so glad they did them.

- Chasing After Deer. Not gonna lie, I cried a little. It was gorgeous. It was all quiet and sad and there's just things you can only get from a song seeing it live.

- Head Home. My favorite, I was very excited.

- Branches. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. What a way to top it off.

They just all seemed like great guys. You could tell that they really love what they're doing. They were so into it. Haha, I'm happy to say I made Tim laugh by demanding a flute solo.

I met the two Erics after the show. I didn't really talk to them, but they signed my poster and they were super-nice. I wanted to hang around and meet the rest of them, but I was ushered out by a guy who worked there. :P

The only bad thing about the show was this fucking drunk chick next to me. ARGH. She'd nudge me with her elbow and smile and scream, "THIS IS GREAT. I LOVE THIS SONG. WOOOOOOO!" and just scream stupid dumb shit during any quiet moment. "PLAY ANOTHER SONG MAAAAAAAN! I LOVE THIS SONG MAAAAAAN!" She was also underage.

But, of course, because good shit usually can't happen to me without disaster, disaster happened. Sean and I ride the respective subway lines to get back to the train station, only to find that the train that the internet told me would be there, wasn't there and we'd missed the last one by like, 10 minutes. I panicked and called my dad, who drove to Boston to get us. I wish I had just taken a breath and called someone IN Boston, like Jessica Survelas or something. If we'd had somewhere to sleep, we could've taken the first train today. I felt really bad that I fucked up the trip and my dad had to rescue us. I'm so lucky that my dad is seriously the most wonderful person ever.

Along with that feeling, I won't ever forget the few homeless people we saw sleeping on benches and in corners of buildings.

It's still weighing me down, but what's done is done. I know not to trust the MBTA website's trip planner anymore, because it's the thing that told me we had a train home. Aside from bad feelings, I've got a bit of concert soreness, as well as a new bruise on my thigh from when my fucking computer chair tipped over backwards about 20 minutes ago. Stupid cheap, light thing.

But yeah, Midlake. I officially give them my #2 best live act spot, behind Gomez.

It felt weird to get out of a show so early. (Before midnight!) It feels so short when I think about it. I'm used to Gomez and several 8+ minute jams and crazy shit like that.

I feel like the whole concert just happened in the blink of an eye.

I can't wait for them to come back.

Bitches Ain't Shit. YES. SO happy to hear this. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
Brick. Awesome. Ben was by himself onstage and the whole crowd was singing along and it was just really lovely.

It was such a fun show. Ben Folds is so fun! He attempted to make us shit our pants with his synthesizer. One thing I loved was that he was randomly like, "There's a great reverb off these glass walls! Check it out!" and he waited until the crowd was dead silent before blasting the synth. Haha, and the reverb was cool.

I'm a big fan of singalongs, so everytime he stopped singing and looked out for the crowd to sing, it was awesome. I love that shit.

The three part harmonies he got us into at the end was my favorite thing of the whole show. Especially when he jumped up on the piano and started directing us and it got a bit ridiculous.

Considering that I'm pretty new as a Folds fan, I had SUCH a great time at this show. Ben is so wonderful. I can't wait until I get to see him again.

And yay at having seen all 3 of the Bens. :)

What a great end to the semester.

Edit: Oh and btw, cool pre-show music! Tom Waits - Going Out West. And Folds came on to The Final Countdown. LOVE THAT.

This is strictly a little review. The random fun details not having exactly to do with the concert itself will find their way in a friends-only entry.

So...wow. Gotta say it: Best concert I've been to yet. As amazing as the last Gomez show I went to was, this show kicked the shit out of it. But first:

Ben Kweller:

He was so wonderful! He was energetic and sweet and sincere and just an incredible amount of fun. Here's his set list in a non-accurate order (the first and last couple are right, the rest...eh):

It was a great set. And his band was great too. His bass player was quite awesome. The sound was great from where we were, one person back from the stage. We were right center too so that was great.

Highlights (for me anyway):

- The Walk On Me opener. I had no idea what he might start with and I'm really happy it was this song.
- I Gotta Move. I just really love that song.
- Family Tree. Another "I just really love that song" song. It was fantastic.
- Living Life. I was never a huge fan of that song but now I have a new love for it. It was really really lovely.
- Hospital Bed. The fans love this song and you can tell that Ben loves playing it for them. He was really cute and energetic during this and it was a lot of fun.
- On My Way. The band left him for this one and it was really really nice. Shame there were lots of people talking in the back (as well as those stupid drunk chicks next to me.)
- Thirteen. BEAUTIFUL. I'm such a sucker for the harmonica and that bit in the middle was just amazing.
- Red Eye. This is another song that I have a new appreciation for. He jammed for quite a while in the middle and it was fucking amazing. I swear he was like, fucking channeling the Grateful Dead. It was incredible. Fucking incredible.

So yeah, I was a little apprehensive about BK live but I would absolutely see him again in a heartbeat, even with his slightly annoying fans. He really is amazing.

Gomez:

Haha, what can I really say? It's fucking Gomez! The BK fans in front of us left so we were right up against the stage. When it got loud, we couldn't hear the vocals well at all, but it was worth it to be that close to everything. Tom was barefoot for whatever reason and I was amused. I was going to post an innacurate setlist, but thanks to the Mez message boards, I can do it right!

Unfortunately we had to leave during the encore to ensure we made the train and didn't get stranded in Boston. But I'm pretty okay with it. It's all the same stuff they played when I last saw them, although Chasing Ghosts (what we heard of it by the door) sounded really really lovely.

Ah, I just love Gomez. They looked nice. Well, Ian looked like he'd just rolled out of bed all unshaven and with messy hair. But it was cute. He wasn't as fun as last time though. Even though I know he gave a few post song "thank you"s, I really can't sharply recall him saying a thing. Or being very interesting at all for that matter. *shrug* I wasn't watching him much. Maybe he was hungover or something. I was amused that he popped the collar of his shirt.

Ben was Ben; sexy and amazing, haha. It was beautiful to be right underneath him.

I'm really happy that Tom was Tom as opposed to the last Tom I saw who was grouchy. Non-grouchy Tom was so fun and wonderful. And kind of hard to photograph because he just kept moving. He wasn't wearing shoes and that amused me.

I watched Blackie a lot because he's just so damn cool. And what a bass player.

I didn't get to see Olly much because Ben was in the way, but he was incredibly fun to watch when I could. I swear that man can't be human. He's like a fucking machine. Watching his drum bit in Cry On Demand was like...hypnotic. Awesome.

And Dajon just rocks. He's always wearing that hat. I bet his head gets sweaty. I couldn't always see him because either Ben or Tom would be in the way.

It was lovely though to be able to see everyone since last time I was crammed on Ian's side of the stage with people around me like sardines.

Highlights:

- Rex Kramer. What a damn fucking fine opener. Fantastic.
- Cry On Demand. It was on the list I made of "songs they might not play but they should 'cause it would be awesome". A lot of the songs on my list were in the set. It was great. And Cry On Demand was really awesome. Loved Olly's drum bit in the middle.
- Wharf Me. I was really really hoping they'd do this. It was nice because it was fairly quiet and I could hear the vocals really well.
- Silhouettes. Beautiful, magical, wonderful, I LOVED it.
- How We Operate. Hands down, best HWO I've ever heard. It was fucking unbelievable.
- Charley Patton Songs. Also really really wonderful. The jam was great. I was waiting for them to kick it into another song, but the finish of this was great too.
- Here Comes The Breeze. Holy fucking shit. It was unreal. Absolutely unreal.
- Hamoa Beach. It had a particularly awesome groove to it.
- Devil Will Ride. I'm always happy to hear this song.
- Chasing Ghosts. What I heard as I left sounded so, so lovely.

Ah man, what a fucking show.

Caitlin had said yesterday that she might not be going tonight. I was hoping that she'd give me a call so I could at least try to arrange a ride with someone else if she wasn't going to go. But she didn't. So I figured all was well but I decided to call her anyway.

Aaaaand her phone is off.

I was going to walk down to the Anchor and see if I could find Carly, but by the time I had finished digging up Caitlin's number and calling her, Carly would've left already if she had even been there.

So what the fuck. I'm really sick of missing rehearsals because I can't get to the fucking place. I feel really guilty. I'd call someone else but Caitlin's is the only number I have.

I'm really hoping that someone will call and be like, "Hey, someone's coming to get you." but I don't know how likely that is. I just feel like a real fucking douche for missing rehearsals.

Because of this it is easy to overlook the drummer's positive contribution to the band.

So, I haven't updated in a few days.

On Sunday I went to the MICCA finals with Emily, Shelly, and Dingus. It was quite enjoyable despite the cold. Met some UMASS people, walked a fucking mile to get food at CVS, and saw a truck full of vacuum cleaners. Finally saw the Gardner band. I don't see what Kylie is so enthused about. We could be as good as them or better even if we practiced as much as they do. They played cute music, but their show was kind of boring.

Yesterday was a crappy day for me. I only got an 88 on my French test, and that was after Mme Trocchio scaled them. I was wicked pissed off. I made the dumbest mistakes EVER. It's because I was wicked tired all week from watching the Sox games. I decided that I'm not going to stay up this week, unless it's a wicked close game.

I also missed a French assignment. I really hate weekend homework, because I don't remember to do it. :P Kind of wicked annoying.

The rest of the day was mediocre. Had to cancel sectionals again. I really must look like the most pathetic section leader ever.

I had a bad headache for most of the day. I got some tylonol from JLyn (extra strength!), but it didn't help. I went home and took some advil. Didn't help. I took a bath. Didn't help. It finally went away just before I went to bed.

Today was pretty uninteresting. Although it seems like there's a disease going around. Jill was sick yesterday, Sarah today, and now Steve's got it. I hope I don't catch it from any of them. I've had my fill of stomach aches and throwing up for now.

But kinda cool! Mrs. Trocchio asked me in French class if I wanted to donate blood at the blood drive on Friday! :D Wicked excited about that!

Drama club almost sucked out loud. I was SO hungry, and the practice didn't end until 6. But Steve came to my rescue and brought me a brownie before leaving.

David did the most retarded thing ever. We were wicked bored from being judges. I was doing my homework, and I hear him struggling with something.

You know those loops on the backs of sneakers? He got his finger stuck in his shoe-loop. For like 10 minutes. It was the funniest thing ever. He finally managed to dislodge his finger just before he had to speak.

So this morning I went shopping with my parents and picked up a couple new ponies. Hasbro is definetly getting an angry email from me about the way they package them. These two were an absolute nightmare. There was GLUE holding the plastic and cardboard parts of the boxes together. Thick YELLOW glue!

I also downloaded Robin Hood. I still really want the DVD, but I have no money to buy it. But I'm happy, because now I can annoy the island as Prince John. :3

So yeah. Nothing else really to talk about. :P
